Homeopathy was developed in the late 1700s by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician. Unlike in standard Western medicine, practitioners of homeopathy believe that “like cures like.”

In other words a person with disease A can be cured by being administered a tiny dose of a substance that causes the symptoms of disease A in a healthy person. This principle is very similar to that underlying vaccine (a little bit of a germ helps the immune system fight off a full-fledged invasion of the same germ). Whereas standard medicine looks upon symptoms as terrible things to be stamped out, homeopathy views symptoms as proper adaptations of the body to problems. Symptoms come about because the body is trying to heal itself. Thus, instead of using powerful drugs to eliminate the symptoms, homeopathy attempts to help the body heal itself. The homeopathic doctor will use a small dose of a highly diluted homeopathic medicine to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes.

The homeopath expects symptoms to be cured in the reverse order in which they appeared, and possibly to get worse before they get better. However, the patient should feel better overall, because the body is stronger. Here are some of the homeopathic medicines that might be used for prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate): Staphysagria, for urinary streams that stop and start and for burning; Pulsatilla, for pain after urinating and for penile discharges; Kalibichromicum, for severe prostate pain worsened by movement, burning after urination, and certain penile discharges; Caustieum, for urinary leakage when coughing, sneezing, or laughing, for pain following urination, and for retention of urine following surgery; Sabal serrulata, for frequent urination and pain in the perineal area. There are other homeopathic medicines that may be given two to three times daily for several days and then stopped as soon as the symptoms improve. The medicines are given one at a time, not in a group.

According to the theory of Oriental medicine, prostatitis is caused by weakness or other difficulties in the kidney, spleen, or liver meridians. There are twelve meridians, or invisible energy pathways, in the body. Prostate problems may be caused by weakness in the kidney meridians, by dampness in the spleen meridian, by a blockage in the liver meridian, or by any combination of the three. According to Oriental medicine, all prostate conditions ranging from an infection to cancer are due to problems with one or more of the three pertinent meridians. A greater problem with the meridians means a more severe illness. Thus, all treatment aims to build up the kidney meridian, dry up the dampness in the spleen meridian, and/ or remove the blockage in the liver meridian.

The more severe the problem, the stronger, more stringent, or longer the treatment, but the basic principle will remain the same unless there is an actual growth (such as a tumor), which will then require specific herbs to break it up. There are genetic dietary, emotional, and other factors contributing to problems with the meridians. The kidney meridian, for example, may be weakened through a lifetime of stress. The liver meridian may be harmed if one is an alcoholic. The treatment for the prostate problem is highly individual, and it depends upon the individual’s specific problems, overall health, and the type of doctor consulted or Oriental medicine used. In general, however, treatment consists of acupuncture, Chinese herbal combinations, emotional changes, and diet to eliminate problems with the affected meridians.

The ancient treatment called hydrotherapy is the use of hot water, cold water, ice, or steam to treat disease and improve overall health. Because of its physical properties related to conditions of heat, buoyancy, and cleansing action, water is an ideal agent for applications of heat and cold to obtain desired physiological effects, debridement of wounds that are extensive and not easily cleansed by other methods, and the implementation of programs of therapeutic exercise.

Application of cold and warm water help relieve pain and improve circulation, promote relaxation and reduce muscle tightness, and serve to localize infections. In the treatment of BPH, patients use a small tub called a sitz bath, in which the buttock and lower belly are immersed in water. A warm bath (up to 99o F) is used for acute prostatitis; a hot bath (up to 115o F) is used to open urinary passageways for patients with nonacute prostatitis; and a cold bath (between 55o F and 75o F) following a warm or hot bath is used for general health benefits once the prostate problem has been cured. Contrast baths, with alternating hot and cold water, may be used to improve muscle tone and circulation in the pelvic area.

Plant products have been found to be helpful in reducing prostate swelling, alleviating the pain, and reducing certain other symptoms. These natural health aids include prostat, pygeum africanum, Equisetum arvense, hydrangea, arborescens, serenoa serrulata, and saw palmetto. Hydrangea root diuretic helps prevent stones or gravel. It helps to dissolve hard deposits in the veins and urinary system. It’s also used in the treatment of inflamed or enlarged prostate glands, and is helpful with urinary stones. Aloe arborescens extracts have been investigated and shown to have wound-healing, anti-bacterial, anti-ulcer, anti- inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, hypoglycemic properties.

Reflexology treats ailments by massaging certain areas of feet or hands. This art goes back at least 5,000 years to the Chinese, and it was used by some Egyptians as far back as 3,000 B.C. According to reflexologists, the body is divided into many zones running up and down or across the body. The kidney is treated, for example, by locating it with the “gridwork,” then treating (massaging) the corresponding area on the feet and hands.

Although no one knows exactly why reflexology works, some of the theories that have been advanced for the success of the therapy include the following: It improves blood circulation; it stimulates the nervous system; it realigns energy system within the body; it stimulates acupuncture points; it encourages the drainage of lymph fluid; and it removes crystal deposits of calcium at the end of the nerves in the feet. Overall the attempt in reflexology is to balance the body, helping it to heal itself.

To treat prostate problems associated with infection and enlargement, the reflexologist will massage foot points corresponding to the prostate, the pituitary gland, the thyroid gland, the adrenal glands, the lymph system, the urethras, and the kidneys. The foot points corresponding to the urinary system are found on the bottom half of the right sole, on the foot. In the hand the prostate point is slightly below the thumb, on the edge of the hand.

Ayurveda medicine is an ancient medical system from India based on the principle that the mind and body are one, so the body cannot be well if the mind is troubled. Only recently introduced to the United States, Ayurveda is a holistic healing system that uses diet, massage, detoxification, herbal remedies, and breathing exercises to treat ailments. According to Ayurveda philosophy, there are many possible causes of cancer itself resulting from physical, emotional, and spiritual imbalances. The three-stage treatment for cancer attempts to detoxify, balance, and rebuild the body through diet, herbs, meditation, spiritual and emotional therapy, and cleansing. Yoga, the chanting of mantras, and gem therapy may also used to enhance the body’s aura.

Detoxification therapies use safe and effective detoxification methods to alleviate from the body the load of toxic substances in order to enhance treatment results. The belief is that detoxification is a decisive step towards restoration of the body’s regulatory mechanism and reversal of diseased cells to the behaviour of normal cells, which are programmed to die when they have fulfilled their task. The cell death is called apoptosis.

With all detoxification patients, whether they suffer from cancer or chronic degenerative diseases, the function of the liver, kidneys, colon, lungs, skin, and lymph system is informed by herbal preparations, supplementation of nutrients, high fluid intake, lymph drainage for infrared sauna, etc., according to individual needs. The liver fulfills many vital functions— digestive, hormonal, and others—and it is responsible for the proper functioning of the organisms in general.

It represents the body’s major detoxification system. The liver removes toxic substances that have been ingested, such as food additives, harmful minerals, toxic medication, etc. It extracts from the blood the residues and waste material resulting from cellular breakdown and transforms them into byproducts that can be excreted by the intestine or kidneys to aid in healing.
