More touching can build a stronger relationship

Regular hugs and touches can help strengthen your relationship, suggests a study in the June 2020 Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.

Researchers explored the effects of nonsexual intimate touch, such as hugging, holding hands, and cuddling, among 184 couples. The participants completed separate self-reports that recorded the amount of touching in their relationship, their satisfaction with touch, and their overall relationship status.

The results found that higher levels of routine affection were linked with greater satisfaction in one’s relationship. Even if people felt anxious about touching, making an effort proved beneficial because their partner recognized the effort of trying to engage. Although the findings could not establish cause and effect, reaching out to your partner this way could be a small gesture that may enhance your relationship.

Bible verses for today’s meditation and inspiration: Matthew E. McLaren

Proverbs 21:30 There is no wisdom and no understanding And no counsel against the LORD.

Acts 5:34-39 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time. And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you propose to do with these men. “For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined up with him. But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.

Genesis 24:12-15 He said, “O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today, and show lovingkindness to my master Abraham. “Behold, I am standing by the spring, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water; now may it be that the girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar so that I may drink,’ and who answers, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels also’–may she be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac; and by this I will know that You have shown lovingkindness to my master.”
