Hazardous emergency

Matthew E. McLaren: In this life, a hazardous emergency could possibly happen to anyone, anyplace, anywhere anytime. When you are confronted with an unexpected hazardous experience, you should be equipped with knowledge of safety awareness and training, which will assist you to use your potential skills developed to overcome challenges as you navigate many of the hostile terrains of life’s joinery. Safety awareness will allow you to eliminate many of the incredible odds, and give you added incentive to be successful. But just what is success anyway? Success is the ability to accomplish your goal regardless of the difficulties your experience… To succeed means to remain healthy and alive. In my thinking; success is taking any given circumstance, accepting the challenges, and using them as learning experiences that give you the mental ability to gain a knowledgeable outcome, that will improve your learning experience and improve your ability to assist others. Success is a state of the mind, for what the mind perceives the mind can achieve if you truly believe and take action…

Success depends on a person’s ability to withstand difficult, hazardous, and stressful conditions and be willing to use your God-given ability to challenge difficult situations that many see as impossible. Your brain is the most capable and valuable equipment you have been given, if you use it with confidence there is no limit to true success. Your brain is the most valuable asset in this world of competitive and stressful environments, where survival of the fittest is the norm. It is not always the most physically equipped people who are the most successful in handling hazardous emergency situations; it is the people who choose to use their experience, knowledge, and skills developed in their journey of life. Success more often depends on your reactions to stressful and hazardous situations, than upon the existing danger. It is the time you take to assess the danger and mentally or physically remove or avoid the hazard that is most effective. Human is given the ability to adapt, live and work in a stressful environment. Mental skills in most situations are more important than physical skills as you navigate life’s challenging pathway…

A person’s mental, psychological, spiritual, and emotional reactions to environmental stress can often make them valuable and available resources to you the world, and the community you live in. You have been given your mental and physical skills by your Creator to be of service to all people. You must develop a positive mental attitude to love and work with all people…
You must be willing by God’s grace to visualize and entertain a mental perception of a proper frame of mind that believes that everything is possible and that all things work together for good to them that believe. Attitude is a psychological state of the mind that influences your action and reaction to life your attitude and action are the most important ingredient of a successful life. With the proper attitude, everything is possible.

To make it through life successfully, the right attitude is necessary. A powerful desire to succeed must entertain a willingness to help others achieve their goals. The mind has the potential power to influence the body in accomplishing phenomenal and extraordinary goals and objectives. Research has shown that belief is often been the major factor for success, it is the belief that oil can be extracted from the oil sand why companies invest in construction projects. Without that belief, there would be no possibility to invest your time and talent to be successful skill workers with the ability and skills to challenge the many hazardous conditions, to make what seems to be impossible possible. Success is possible in most challenging situations but it demands a lot of personal willingness to develop an attitude of cooperation and unity by all workers. Construction workers can be very brave and resourceful when in emergency situations, however, the most important factor in a successful project is to assess, prevent and eliminate the hazards before they become an incident for emergency response.

The human mind is a very powerful force and it must be nurtured and used to ascertain love and respect for others. The mind cooperates with the body to control the mental, physical, internal, and external stressful environment that challenges your ability to succeed… What affects you mentally, affects you physically therefore you must develop a mental and spiritual attitude to appreciate the success of others. If you think that you are more important than others you will become a liability to your team. A commitment or goal to succeed demands responsibility to the team you and the project you are working for. Refusal to give up on a negative attitude is an avenue for success and will lead to a pathway of eliminating or containing hazardous disasters…
A positive attitude, influenced by your action has a strong potential to mentality motivate you in achieving your set goals and give you the attitude necessary to succeed overpressures of life, that may have defeated others. When placed in an unexpected difficult situation use your ability to think not your will to force an unsuccessful outcome…
You should learn to develop a mental capacity to picture your goal and objective in your mind and visualize yourself reaching them.

A person with strong willpower can overcome many obstacles. You should never give up your goal to succeed, because, without any desire to succeed, you will likely be lost in despair and die.
In this life, you will be confronted with many problems that you will need to overcome. Your ability to think will be your best asset but it could also be your most dangerous enemy if you do not make the right choice. You will have to defeat negative thoughts and imaginations, and also control and master your fears… You will need to shift your mental motor into overdrive and approach that difficult terrain with a positive and optimistic “I can do it attitude”. In the oil sand industry, you will need to be creative and use your ability to improvise to adapt to a hazardous and difficult situation. Work with your team instead of against them. You may be faced with the crucial task of solving the problems of helping others and yourself to stay alive. Your problem solving must be based on recognizing the hazards that are threats to your project your team, equipment, and the environment. In the oil sand industry, knowing the severity of danger that exists in completing a task; allows you to develop a plan of actions that will keep you safe and alive. It is important to consider your safety and the safety of others at all times.

If you analyze the hazards you need to combat it will be easier to plan for known dangers and take affirmative action to the preventive incident than if you were fighting something unknown. When you encounter dangers, such as fatigue, pain, cold/heat, thirst, and fear, remember that they are your major enemies; defeat them by following the policy and procedure of the project safety plan.
To keep your mind and body alive you must listen to your body, their many problem indicators switch, so to speak which identify acute pains and aches, to alert of danger do not ignore them, because will become chronic illness such as back injury, that will defeat your success of health and wealth. Defend yourself against these miner enemies do not let them become major enemies that will prevent you from attaining your goals. Always remember to keep your positive mental attitude in every phase of your journey of life. Do not add extra burden to yourself because falling into a destructive mental state could lead to addictive habits such as taking addictive substances…Remember the important aspects of your life on the oil sand is to gain health and wealth.

Think of being healthy as an opportunity to explore new possibilities. With the proper mental attitude, you will experience optimum health. Enjoy the challenge of life they will enhance your holistic ability to defend and defeat enemies of your mind-body. You might as well enjoy good health while you can. Good health is a product of your gift of life. Your positive mental attitude will help you combat your enemies. Most people in the work environment have experienced stressors, which lead to fatigue, pain, hunger, thirst, and fear of old age and death. Anyone or a combination of these stressors can diminish your health and prevent you from achieving your goal and objective. When your self-confidence is reduced because of illness you begin to struggle with good work habits…

Fatigue is an enemy that can hit you without warning. It will strike you when you realize you are the only person around who can be depending on while in a dangerous situation. The oil sand industry gives us a chance to test our ability to adapt to hazardous situations, with the support of others and an up-to-date adapted safety program. Do not let fatigue or other stressful condition limit your ability to take positive action. Fight fatigue by getting enough sleep and rest before starting your task…Fatigue is the overuse of the muscles and the mind and is a serious threat. It can cause you to lower your defenses and become less aware and alert to danger. It causes inattention, carelessness, and loss of judgment and reasoning.

Take time to refresh and rest your brain and body. Conserve your energy. Rest, sleep, and calmness are essential. Pain is nature’s signal that something is wrong. When in moments of excitement you may not feel any pain. Don’t let it get the best of you; it can weaken your desire to go on…..
Cold and heat are other enemies of survival. Exposure to the elements can be very dangerous. Get sheltered as best you can. If cold try and find shelter and build a fire. If in really hot weather get out of the sun. In the cold you might find it easier to sleep in the daytime and stay awake at night by a warm fire. In very hot weather you might also want to seek shelter and/or sleep in the daytime.

Hunger and thirst are enemies that can really depress your positive mental attitude. Try and find some water. Food can wait. A person can survive for weeks without food. Try and conserve your body’s energy reserves. You may be better off resting than wandering around aimlessly looking for food. Even if you find the food you may have depleted more energy than the food can supply you with. If you can acquire food easily then go for it. A man with a full belly can withstand more survival pressures than a man with an empty belly. Lack of nutrition could make you more susceptible to depression. Remember your positive frame of mind and keep your goal to live fresh in your mind.
Fear is a big enemy to guard against. Fear is a completely normal reaction for anyone faced with an out of an ordinary situation that threatens his important needs.

People fear a lot of things. People have fear of death, getting lost, animals, suffering, ridicule, and of their own weaknesses. The thing most feared by people going into the wilderness is getting lost. There is no way to tell how someone will react to fear. Fear usually depends entirely on the individual rather than on the situation at hand. Fear could lead a person to panic or stimulate a greater effort to survive. Fear negatively influences a man’s behavior and reduces his chances for successful survival. The worst feelings that magnify fear are hopelessness and helplessness. Don’t let the idea of a complete disaster cross your mind. There is no benefit in trying to avoid fear by denying the existence of a dangerous survival situation. You need to accept that fear is a natural reaction to a hazardous situation and try to make the best of your predicament.

Do your very best to control your fears. Be realistic. Don’t let your imagination make mountains out of molehills. Expect fear and learn to recognize it. Live with fear and understand how it can alter your effectiveness in survival situations. Don’t be ashamed of any fears you may have. Control fear, don’t let it control you. Fears can be lessened by keeping the body busy and free from thirst, hunger, pain, discomfort, and any other enemies to survive. Learning basic outdoor and first aid skills may help you prevent or ease fears by increasing your confidence in yourself. If fear creeps up on you make sure to think of positive things. Maintain your positive mental attitude.

A more dangerous enemy than fear is panic. Panic is an uncontrolled urge to run or hurry from the situation. Panic is triggered by the mind and imagination under stress. It results from fear of the unknown, lack of confidence, not knowing what to do next, and a vivid imagination. Fear can build up to panic and cause a person to make a bad situation worse. In a panic, a person’s rational thinking disappears and can produce a situation that results in tragedy. A panic state could lead to exhaustion, injury, or death. A positive mental attitude is still the best remedy. To combat fear and panic keep your cool, relax, see the brighter side of things, and stay in control. Keep up your positive self-talk and remember your goal of survival.

Keeping a positive mental outlook is for certain the most important aspect of survival. While in a survival situation you will practice self-reliance. You will only be able to depend on yourself and your abilities. You will have to overcome many challenges that you are not accustomed to. Modern society is conditioned to instant relief from discomforts such as darkness, hunger, pain, thirst, boredom, cold, and heat. Adapt yourself and tolerate it, it’s only temporary. When you first realize that you’re in a survival situation stop and regain your composure. Control your fears. Recognize dangers to your life. Relax and think; don’t make any hasty judgments. Observe the resources around you. Analyze your situation and plan a course of action only after considering all of the aspects of your predicament. Be sure to keep cool and collected. It is important to make the right decision at all times. Set your goal of survival and always keep it fresh in your mind. Never give up. Prepare for the worst but hope for the best.
