Scientists have analysed the chemical changes during physical activity and identified over 20 metabolite alterations. Some of these substances aid in burning calories and fat, while others contribute to stabilising blood sugar levels, among other functions. Maintaining a healthy weight and regular exercise create a beneficial cycle that optimises and sustains healthy glucose and insulin levels by enhancing insulin receptor sensitivity. As previously noted, insulin resistance, primarily caused by excessive intake of refined sugars and grains coupled with a lack of physical activity, is the root cause of nearly all chronic diseases that can significantly reduce life expectancy.
For instance, heart disease and cancer rank among the leading causes of death in Americans, and engaging in physical activity can effectively help prevent the development of both conditions. This is mainly achieved by lowering insulin and reducing estrogen levels, contributing to exercise’s significant impact on breast cancer prevention. Furthermore, exercise is considered crucial for the successful management of serious illnesses such as cancer. A recent report released by Macmillan Cancer Support suggests that exercise should be an integral part of standard cancer care, advocating for all individuals undergoing cancer treatment to participate in moderate-intensity exercise for at least two and a half hours per week.
Studies have demonstrated that regular physical activity can decrease cancer mortality risk. For instance, it has been found to lower the likelihood of dying from prostate cancer. According to research conducted by Harvard Medical School, engaging in moderate exercise for three to five hours a week can reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer by up to 50% compared to being inactive. This benefit is consistent regardless of when the cancer was diagnosed. Furthermore, any amount of weekly exercise increases the likelihood of surviving breast cancer and reduces the risk of recurrence by approximately 40%. Additionally, exercise can help boost energy levels and minimise the side effects of traditional cancer treatments, as stated by Ciaran Devane, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support. Cancer patients may be surprised to learn the significant positive impact of physical activity on their recovery and long-term health, potentially reducing the need for further treatment. Engaging in gardening, brisk walking, or swimming can make a difference. While exercise is essential, it only contributes to about 20% of the overall health benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The majority of benefits come from maintaining proper nutrition.
