Chronic pain.

Chronic pain sufferers may consider various methods to alleviate their symptoms, including the use of electrical stimulation. The idea of using electricity for pain relief dates back to ancient times, with the Greeks using electric discharges from torpedo fish to treat headaches and gout. As our understanding of electricity grew, scientists began applying it to medical treatments. Today, several electroceutical therapies are available for pain management, three of which are particularly noteworthy.
One such therapy is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), where a device delivers low-intensity electrical pulses through electrodes placed on the skin. These pulses remain consistent in strength and frequency throughout a 20-minute session. TENS works by closing the gate that allows pain signals to reach the brain, similar to how rubbing an injury can provide relief by closing this gate. This explanation comes from Vitaly Napadow, the director of the Scott Schoen and Nancy Adams Discovery Center for Recovery from Chronic Pain.

TENS therapy, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is a popular method for managing pain using low-intensity electrical currents applied to targeted body areas via skin electrodes. By operating on the gate control theory, TENS aims to reduce pain.

  1. The concept of TENS is rooted in the gate control theory of pain, which suggests that there are pathways in the nervous system that regulate the transmission of pain signals to the brain. These pathways can either allow pain signals to pass through and be felt as pain or block these signals from reaching the brain, reducing pain perception.
    2. TENS therapy involves using a machine that produces controlled, low-intensity electrical pulses. These pulses are transmitted through electrodes placed on the skin near the area where pain is experienced.

    3. When the TENS machine sends electrical pulses to sensory nerve fibres in the skin, it triggers non-painful signals to be shipped to the brain. This essentially closes the gate for pain signals, as the brain receives a mix of sensations, including tingling or buzzing from the electrical stimulation, which can interfere with or lessen feelings of pain.

    4. The overall goal of TENS therapy is to alleviate feelings of pain by influencing how pain signals are communicated and processed in the nervous system. It serves as a distraction and may also prompt the release of endorphins, natural chemicals our bodies produce that act as painkillers, further contributing to relief from discomfort.

TENS therapy is often used as a non-invasive and drug-free approach to manage various types of acute and chronic pain, such as back pain, arthritis, muscle pain, and nerve-related pain conditions. It is generally considered safe when used as directed and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Bible verses for today’s meditation and inspiration: Matthew E. McLaren

2 Corinthians 13:9 For we rejoice when we ourselves are weak but you are strong; this we also pray for, that you be made complete.

2 Corinthians 10:15-16 not boasting beyond our measure, that is, in other men’s labors, but with the hope that as your faith grows, we will be, within our sphere, enlarged even more by you, so as to preach the gospel even to the regions beyond you, and not to boast in what has been accomplished in the sphere of another.

2 Thessalonians 1:3 We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater;

2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Ephesians 1:17-18 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

Ephesians 3:16-19 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, read more
